Serge Betsen: driven by experience and passion

Serge Betsen’s story began on the 25th March 1974 in Kumba, Cameroon. He arrived in France when he was 9 years old. There, he discovered rugby at the age of 12 at the club called Clichy la Garenne, starting what would be a lifelong passion.  Serge Betsen got his first cap with the French national team in 1997 against Italy. Nicknamed the “Grim Reaper” because of his famous tackles and fast starts, he is considered to be the best tackler in world rugby by many. He was the best player of the French championship in 2002. And in 2004 he was nominated for Best World Player by the IRB. In May 2008, he opened a new chapter of his life by signing for London Wasps, where he was Captain for two seasons before hanging up the boots for good.

Serge Betsen Rugby: A coaching programme for all.

In 2014, Serge Betsen founded the Serge Betsen Rugby programme.  When he realised the lack of sports in the French school system and its underestimation, he decided to bring his experience of the Anglo-Saxon system where sports is included in a wider context of the definition of success. Serge Betsen Rugby is also about a legacy.  More than just a game, rugby has given Serge Betsen the tools both on and off the pitch. And this is the governing principle of what we do. We build our programmes for girls and boys and aim to deliver high-quality coaching through innovative techniques. Our objective? Instilling a unique and lifelong passion for sports and putting a rugby ball in everybody’s hands.
